The L serial number designation indicates that this piano was manufactured in Wurlitzers Logan, Utah plant.

Because piano manufacturers differ in their descriptions, the best way to communicate your piano size is to provide a make and model number.

Please note that the serial number will not provide the piano size, however, if your piano is going to be picked up or delivered at a business, it may be beneficial to provide your mover with the serial number as well.

The information and images below provide general information and brand specific areas.

If you cannot find any serial or model numbers, your piano may have been refurbished and the number plate, if there was one, was not put back on or the number was covered.

In a 200 series instrument or later, the badge will usually be under the keyboard, on the left side, near the 14 jack(s).

In earlier instruments, especially portables, this may be on the back or side panel.

We want to know the model number and the specific serial number, including any inked or stamped letters like L or P.

Look as well for any light stamps next to the model number, like an A next to an inked 140 or 145.

They are not completely chronological, but ranges of numbers are allotted to runs of instruments in a model or series.

Notice that the A in the model number box is just lightly embossed next to the inked 140.

They were using up 140 plates (image yanked off an auction site.).

Please check action rail, keys, speakers, transformer, plus keybed, capacitorstubes, the amp itself (which is sometimes stamped, especially on later pre-A 200s).

Handwritten dates on the lowest A key (1968-1972, non-L instruments) are especially useful.

The keys and main action rails will be stamped Y MM DD XXX (colors my own); sometimes a digit at either end will be smudged, faint, or covered.

Those last X digits are a sequence number to differentiate each part.) The year-digit ( Y ) doesnt include the decade; so, August 31 1976 keys will be stamped 6 08 31 XXX, with the 6 meaning 197 6.

You need to know the span of years in which your instrument was produced to interpolate the first 3 digits of the year (in other words, 196-, 197- or 198-).

This stamp is behind the treblemost chopped dampers on most instruments from 1963 on.

Occasionally it is at the bass end in the first year of the stamps.) This is a 200A.

A series instruments (also including 210s, 270s, 200Bs and all other models starting with 2 and ending with A) were made from 1974 to 1983.

So the first 2 here indicates a year of 1982.

February 19th.

The pre-A 200 series instruments, including 203, 203W, 206, 207, 214 (all without A in the model number) as well 106, were produced from 1968 to 1974.

Then, 0828 means August 28.

Notice that CM handwritten date Thats the best data you can find, if your instrument has it.

That will almost always be the latest production date on the instrument: In this example, Nov.

This CM or RT number appears only on 200 series instruments produced from 1968 to 1972 with no L in the serial number.) If this was a 200A instrument, that first 0 would indicate 1980, instead of 1970.

This instrument is from the 200A era, which ran from 1974 to 1983.

So we know that the 6 means 1976.

August 31. 700 is a sequence number to give each set of keys a distinct number.

They will be accompanied by an initial: usually CM, but sometimes RT or RP.

Without fail, this will be the latest date in the instrument.

It will not include the year, but that data can be found in the other stamps.

See example above.

Noteas this number is under the amp rail, it will take significant dis-assembly to reach it.
